Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage works by applying firm and highly directed pressure to your muscles. Deep tissue massages focus on realigning deeper layers of muscles and on breaking down adhesions that form within your muscle’s connective tissue. Adhesions usually form when there is sustained tension in a muscle. A deep tissue massage attempts to relieve pain and tension by breaking down these adhesions.

Massage therapists use a variety of movements and methods of applying pressure during a deep tissue massage. They may use their knuckles, elbows, fingers, and forearms to get the job done and you may be told to take deep breaths as the therapist works on especially tense areas. At some points during a deep tissue massage, you may experience slight discomfort and slight pain, however, any pain or soreness you experience should not be outside your comfort range. If you do experience pain or discomfort outside your comfort range, it’s important to let your massage therapist know. Once a deep tissue massage has been completed, you may experience some temporary stiffness. This is normal and should not last long.

  • Don’t eat a large meal before getting your massage
  • Drink water before and after the massage in order to help flush out toxins released during the massage
  • Avoid heavy activity after getting your massage
  • Stretch before the massage to help avoid muscle aches afterwards
